The facts
On 29 October, the TSE upheld the Alagoas regional electoral court’s refusal to register João Francisco de Assis Neto, known as Dr. João Neto, as a federal-deputy candidate. [1][2]
The court said the conviction had been confirmed by a panel of judges, satisfying the electoral restriction under Complementary Law 64/1990. Its ruling concerns bodily injury against a woman on gender grounds. [1]
Reporting judge Dias Toffoli said this interpreted the existing legal category rather than creating a new statutory ground. The court will ask Congress to expressly include convictions for violence against women; that request is not enacted legislation. [1][2]
