The facts

  1. IMD National Bulletin No. 18, issued at 3 a.m. IST on 3 November from the 2:30 a.m. observation, says the landfall process was continuing and the forward wall-cloud region was entering the coast. The centre remained about 30 km southeast of Ongole; completed centre crossing was not confirmed. [16]

  2. PTI reported that the landfall process commenced around 1 a.m. IST near Ongole. It reported winds up to 110 km/h, gusts up to 120 km/h, and heavy rain in several places, citing IMD. [17]

  3. The Indian Express reported that Odisha had moved more than 160,000 people to safety by its 7:32 p.m. IST update on 2 November and planned to evacuate 333,000 by 10 p.m. The planned figure was not a confirmed completed total. [13]

  4. LiveMint reported flight disruptions at Vijayawada, Chennai and Visakhapatnam as the cyclone approached; the airport and airline figures in that report are separate snapshots, not a reconciled regional cancellation total. [15]

  5. IMD’s 2 November press release contains conflicting storm-surge ranges, and the available reports do not establish a measured surge or resulting coastal inundation. [10][12][17]

  6. AP reported that Murasu made landfall near Ongole in the morning, with maximum sustained winds of 100–110 km/h, citing the India Meteorological Department. [18]

  7. The Indian Express reported hundreds of trees uprooted in Nellore, Prakasam and Bapatla districts, low-lying areas inundated, and no power disruption in its early update. [19]

  8. The New Indian Express reported thousands of trees and hundreds of electric poles damaged, boats and crops affected, and power and communication disruption. These are local early assessments and differ from the Indian Express account; neither is a final damage tally. [20]

  9. The current opened reports did not establish a death or injury toll; absence of a reported total is not evidence that there were no casualties. [18][19][20]

Still unconfirmed

  • A complete official damage assessment and the number of people killed or injured remain unknown in the reports reviewed.
  • The final number of people evacuated and the duration of remaining power, communications and transport disruptions have not been established.

Corrections & updates

Update: IMD’s Coastal Bulletin No. 7, issued at 23:12 IST on 1 November, adds a 1.0–1.5 metre storm-surge warning above astronomical tide for low-lying south coastal Andhra. It forecasts the highest surge over Bapatla, Krishna and Prakasam. This remains a forecast; no landfall or resulting damage is reported here.

Substantive update: replaced the earlier Bulletin 7 position and timing with IMD National Bulletin 10, issued at 02:00 IST on 2 November. It reports the 23:30 IST position on 1 November and retains a late 2 November–early 3 November severe-storm crossing and 1.0–1.5 m surge forecast. No landfall or impact is asserted.

Substantive update, 2 November: replaced National Bulletin 10’s older position and timing with IMD National Bulletin 11 and the later 6:48 a.m. IST coastal bulletin. The severe-cyclone crossing window and 1.0–1.5 m surge remain forecasts; no landfall or impact is claimed.

Substantive update, 2 November: replaced the 6:48 a.m. coastal bulletin with IMD’s later No. 9 bulletin issued at 9:17 a.m. IST. Updated the observed position and distance; the crossing window, winds and surge remain forecasts, not a recorded landfall or impact.

Substantive update, 2 November UTC: replaced the 9:17 a.m. coastal-bulletin snapshot with the current Bulletin No. 9, issued at 9:22 a.m. IST. Updated the 0000 UTC position and forecast surge. The bulletin’s UTC conversion for the crossing window is internally inconsistent with its date wording, so the article leaves exact timing unresolved and does not claim landfall or impacts.

Substantive update, 2 November: added IMD Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 6 with its explicit 1800–2200 UTC crossing forecast. This clarifies the prior coastal-bulletin date-conversion ambiguity; it remains a forecast, not a landfall report.

Substantive update, 2 November: replaced the earlier position and timing with IMD’s 13:00 IST press release and added reported school and fishing precautions. The release’s two surge ranges conflict and are stated as such. The forecast is not a landfall or impact report.

Substantive update, 2 November: replaced the earlier 13:00 IST position snapshot with IMD’s Sea Area Bulletin issued at 18:30 IST. The storm’s last plotted center was at 14:30 IST, about 100 km east of Nellore; the bulletin retains a late 2 November to early 3 November crossing forecast. The observation time is stated explicitly, and no landfall or impact is claimed. The earlier release’s conflicting surge estimates remain unresolved.

Substantive forecast update, 2 November UTC: added the IMD ACWC 18:30 IST sea-area bulletin, whose latest storm position is timed 14:30 IST. It continues to forecast a severe-storm crossing tonight; landfall and impacts are not yet confirmed.

Substantive update, 2 November UTC: replaced the earlier 14:30 IST position with the latest fix carried by APSDMA’s live feed from IMD Bulletin 18, timed 18:00 UTC on 2 November. The bulletin forecasts a severe-storm crossing in the early hours of 3 November. This remains a forecast; no landfall, casualties or impacts are claimed.

Substantive update, 2 November UTC: refreshed APSDMA’s official feed through its 22:24 UTC update, which still carried the 21:00 UTC IMD position fix, and added separately attributed flight disruptions reported by LiveMint. The crossing remains forecast; no landfall, casualties or damage are claimed.

Substantive update, 2 November UTC / 3 November IST: replaced the forecast-only status with IMD’s report that the landfall process was continuing at 03:00 IST, with the wall-cloud region entering the coast and the centre still southeast of Ongole. Added PTI’s report that the process commenced around 01:00 IST and that heavy rain and severe winds were affecting the area. The centre’s completed crossing, casualties and overall damage remain unconfirmed.

Substantive update, 3 November: AP and local reporting confirm Murasu crossed near Ongole and describe realized damage and service disruptions. Earlier forecast-only wording has been replaced; casualty and final damage totals remain unknown.
