The facts
The IPC estimate covers 23% of the population analysed at Crisis level or worse (Phase 3 or above), including 3.6 million at Emergency level (Phase 4). [1]
For January–June 2027, the assessment projects 30.3 million people in Phase 3 or above, including 4.2 million in Phase 4. Projections describe a forecast, rather than a completed count. [1]
The UN account identifies conflict, displacement, rising prices, disease and climate shocks as drivers. It does not classify the entire country as being in famine. [1]
Separately, Action Against Hunger reports that fear of infection has reduced attendance at health and nutrition facilities in areas it supports, worsening access to care. [2]
Still unconfirmed
- The figures are assessment estimates and projections; this report does not establish a later realised total or countrywide famine.

Actual UN account of the newly released IPC assessment read. Direct IPC PDF and country page were inaccessible (403/cache failure), so this article attributes the figures to the UN account rather than claiming those documents were read.

Actual NGO field account read. Independently owned from the UN. Its national hunger figure uses the same IPC assessment, not a second independent population measurement; its health-facility observations supply separate local context.
