The facts

  1. The Papua New Guinea–Australia ministerial communiqué says the PNG government released PGK10 million per province and PGK5 million per district for essential water, food and health support under NEC Decision 154/2026. These are the governments' reported funding actions. [1]

  2. FM100 reported that PNG Power's Ramu Grid load shedding began on 22 October because low water at Yonki Dam reduced hydro generation. It affects customers across Lae, Madang, Goroka, Jiwaka, Kundiawa and Mount Hagen. [3]

  3. The Guardian's 30 October reporting describes food rationing, difficult access to water and curtailed school and clinic services, based on resident and aid-worker accounts. These are local observations, not a uniform count for every province. [2]

  4. NBC reports CARE food vouchers reaching 16 communities in Goroka, Ungai-Bena and Kainantu. Each voucher is worth PGK220; the scheme began as fuel-crisis assistance and now also helps drought-affected households. [4]

  5. The 20 October communiqué also records Australia's AUD7 million commitment for water, agriculture, humanitarian logistics and school support. A commitment is not proof that all assistance has reached recipients. [1]

Still unconfirmed

  • A reconciled current nationwide affected-person total, completed relief coverage, final casualty totals and the end of the drought remain unknown.
