The facts
Researchers randomized 338 patients with EGFR-mutated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer and high MET expression, MET amplification or both, after progression on osimertinib. The open-label trial used blinded independent review for its primary progression endpoint. [1][2]
Median overall survival was 17.8 months with the combination versus 12.9 months with chemotherapy, OncLive reported. The published abstract gives a death hazard ratio of 0.68 (95% confidence interval 0.50–0.91; P=0.01), a relative comparison rather than a guarantee for an individual. [1][2]
Median progression-free survival was 7.6 versus 5.4 months. The primary endpoint hazard ratio was 0.55 (95% confidence interval 0.42–0.72; P<0.001). [1][2]
Grade 3 or higher treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 64% versus 63% of patients. OncLive also reported one treatment-related fatal pneumonitis in the combination arm. [1][2]
The New England Journal of Medicine paper is titled Osimertinib–Savolitinib in Advanced NSCLC after Progression during EGFR-TKI Therapy (DOI 10.1056/NEJMoa2611335; trial NCT05261399). AstraZeneca funded the trial. [1]
OncLive reported that a US approval application was filed in September. A trial result or application is not itself evidence of US regulatory approval. [2]
Still unconfirmed
- Benefits outside the trial's biomarker-defined, previously treated population are not established by this study.
- The checked records do not establish a subsequent US approval or comparative results against treatments not tested in this trial.
