The facts

  1. Statutory Instrument 2026/1131 specifies 5925–7125 MHz for registered dynamic-spectrum-access services. Companion instrument 2026/1132 sets the device exemption and its conditions. Both were made on 27 October and commence on 10 November. [1][2]

  2. Standard-power access points and fixed clients must obtain permitted channels and power limits from an Ofcom-registered automated frequency coordination system. The exemption is conditional, rather than unrestricted permission to use the entire band. [2]

  3. Those devices must request new operating parameters at power-on and at least every 24 hours. If a later request fails, previous parameters may be used for one further 24-hour period; transmission must then stop until new parameters are obtained. [2]

  4. The rules cover land-based equipment and exclude the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Mobile clients must connect to a standard-power access point and cannot operate under this exemption in moving vehicles. [2]

Relevant context

Ofcom described the AFC framework in July as a way to enable higher-power and outdoor Wi-Fi while protecting existing services. TechRadar independently reported the July spectrum-sharing decision. The October instruments provide the legal conditions and start date; they are not a new consumer-router launch. [3][4]

Still unconfirmed

  • These instruments do not establish when particular vendors or providers will offer compliant services to customers.
