The facts
AP reported WHO said a nurse was killed and a response worker severely injured in an attack on 24 October in Bafwasende, Tshopo, while responding to an Ebola alert. [15][16]
Actualite.cd cited the Bafwasende health-zone chief, who said the workers were attacked by local youths after being accused of spreading Ebola through a water source. The report does not identify individual attackers or establish arrests. [16]
The NCDC said on 31 October that two suspected cases identified in Yola, Adamawa State, tested negative after two rounds of laboratory testing; it said the Federal Capital Territory patient remained Nigeria's only confirmed case. Premium Times and THISDAY independently reported the statement. [17][18]
DRC SitRep No. 169 records 10,414 cumulative confirmed cases and 5,372 deaths through 30 October, with a 51.6% case-fatality ratio. It separately reports 63 new cases and 32 deaths during 30 October; these daily figures are not the cumulative total. [19]
The DRC report says a 29 October data-harmonization review changed Ituri’s cumulative death count from 3,436 to 3,750 across 97% of its health zones, affecting the reported national total. [19]
ECDC’s 30 October update says Kenya had nine confirmed cases and two deaths as of 26 October; its last case was reported 20 October and the second death 23 October. [14]
ECDC says Nigeria’s confirmed case was medically evacuated to Switzerland on 26 October and 62 contacts were under follow-up as of 29 October. The dates do not establish the patient’s later status or any new infection. [14]
AP reported on 1 November, citing the latest DRC government data it had seen on Saturday, 10,351 people infected and 5,026 deaths. Those figures conflict with SitRep No. 169's 10,414 cases and 5,372 deaths through 30 October after data harmonization; the exact current cumulative total is unresolved. [20][19]
DRC SitRep No. 170 reports 10,467 cumulative confirmed cases and 5,103 deaths through 31 October; it lists 53 new cases and 45 deaths for 31 October. These daily figures are not the cumulative totals. [20]
SitRep No. 170’s cumulative totals conflict with SitRep No. 169 through 30 October (10,414 cases and 5,372 deaths) and AP’s account of Saturday government data (10,351 cases and 5,026 deaths). The current cumulative totals remain unreconciled; the latest bulletin says Ituri validation is still pending. [19][20][18]
CDC’s 2 November page reports 5,107 confirmed deaths across affected countries as of 31 October, including 5,103 in DRC, two in Kenya and two in Uganda; it lists one additional probable Ugandan death separately. The page gives one confirmed case and no deaths in Nigeria, and one recovered case with no deaths in France. [1]
Kenya’s Ministry of Health said on 3 November that nine cases had been reported in one transmission chain, with no new case since 19 October. It said 46 contacts had completed 21-day monitoring and 52 remained under follow-up. [2]
Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and The Standard reported that five patients had recovered and been discharged after negative tests, while two remained in care; both reported 52 contacts still under monitoring. [3][4]
Still unconfirmed
- The latest DRC SitRep No. 170 and CDC report 5,103 confirmed deaths through 31 October, but DRC SitRep No. 169 reports 5,372 through 30 October. The opened sources do not reconcile these cumulative totals; no actual decline is inferred.
- The DRC SitRep says data harmonization and conciliation with Ituri are ongoing and a validation meeting will be held; its outcome is unknown.
- The patient’s clinical status and surveillance figures after the dates stated by ECDC and CDC are unknown.
- The efficacy of the investigational vaccine candidates is not established.
Corrections & updates
Update: Added the 26 October medical evacuation confirmed by Geneva authorities, continued monitoring of Nigerian contacts, and ECDC’s 27 October response announcement. The earlier case and death totals retain their stated reporting dates; the evacuation does not establish that transmission has ended.
Update: Added ECDC’s 28 October assessment with data through 26 October, replacing older country totals. It records Kenya’s second death and 54 Nigerian contacts under follow-up. The contact count differs from the earlier AP report of 52; the sources do not explain the difference.
Update: Added the verified launch and design of the Tumaini vaccine trial from the organizer release, The Citizen and MSF. Disclosed conflicting first-vaccination dates instead of selecting an unsupported date. No vaccine-efficacy result is claimed; earlier surveillance totals retain their reporting cutoffs.
Update: Added ECDC’s 29 October assessment, replacing the earlier DRC totals with 10,193 confirmed cases and 4,960 deaths through 27 October, and the Nigerian contact count with 62 as of 27 October. Confirmed the deployed expert team. The new contact count does not indicate additional infections; vaccine results and the conflicting first-vaccination dates remain unresolved. Added AP’s account of persistent weekly transmission and gaps in contact tracing; expert worst-case forecasts are not treated as established outcomes.
Update: Added the ministers’ agreement on borders and coordinated surveillance, confirmed in Anadolu and AP reporting of Africa CDC’s statement. Existing case totals retain their 27 October cutoff; no new infection count, universal lifting of travel restrictions or vaccine-efficacy finding is asserted.
Substantive update: Added the newly reported affected health zone of Yakoma and ECDC’s 30 October geographic assessment, alongside surveillance totals through 28 October and dated Nigerian contact monitoring. The new location is distinct from a numerical milestone; country scope, travel-policy qualifications and investigational vaccine limits are preserved.
Substantive update: Added AP's October 31 reporting of an October 30 strike over unpaid wages at the Tchomia Ebola treatment centre, together with its attributed newer Congo ministry totals. ECDC's October 28 surveillance cutoff, dated country figures, travel-policy qualifications and trial uncertainty remain explicit; the new cumulative totals are not presented as same-day infections or deaths.
Substantive update, 1 November: added AP/WHO reporting of the 24 October Bafwasende attack on response workers and the NCDC-reported negative tests for two suspected Adamawa cases on 31 October. The local perpetrators remain unidentified; the suspected cases are not counted as infections. Existing Congo totals retain their source dates.
Correction and substantive update, 1 November: comparison with the DRC Ministry of Health's 29 October Situation Report No. 168 found conflicting cumulative death totals—5,026 in the summary and 5,339/5,340 in detailed tables. Because the report does not reconcile them, the exact total is now stated as unknown; AP's attribution and the supported threshold of more than 5,000 deaths are retained. The outbreak, response-worker attack and Nigeria's negative tests remain separately dated.
Added the verified CAR border-screening response and explicitly kept it separate from confirmed outbreak locations. Removed one unused eNCA republication of AP to stay within the 20-source article limit; the original AP source remains.
Substantive update and correction, 2 November: replaced the unresolved 29 October SitRep No. 168 death totals with the newer DRC SitRep No. 169, which records 5,372 cumulative deaths through 30 October and explains that an Ituri data-harmonization review raised its reported total from 3,436 to 3,750. Added ECDC’s dated Kenya and Nigeria status through 26–29 October. No later patient status or new infection is inferred.
Substantive update and correction, 2 November: added AP’s report of Saturday DRC government figures (10,351 infections and 5,026 deaths) alongside SitRep No. 169’s harmonized totals through 30 October (10,414 cases and 5,372 deaths). The conflict is now explicit and the exact current cumulative total is unresolved.
Substantive update and correction, 2 November: added the DRC Ministry/INSP SitRep No. 170 through 31 October (10,467 cases; 5,103 deaths; 53 cases and 45 deaths reported that day). Its cumulative totals still differ from No. 169 and AP’s earlier government figures, and Ituri validation remains pending. Daily counts are kept distinct from cumulative totals; no actual decline in deaths is inferred.
Substantive update and data clarification, 3 November: added the CDC’s 2 November situation page, which independently confirms the DRC Ministry/INSP SitRep No. 170 figures of 10,467 cases and 5,103 deaths through 31 October and reports 5,107 confirmed deaths across affected countries. The earlier SitRep No. 169 total of 5,372 through 30 October remains discrepant; the latest DRC bulletin says Ituri data reconciliation and validation are still in progress. The mismatch is retained and no actual decline is inferred.
Substantive update, 3 November: added Kenya Ministry of Health and local reporting that five patients have recovered and 46 contacts completed monitoring, while two patients and 52 contacts remain. The DRC bulletin discrepancy is unchanged and no decline is inferred.
